The Why Skylights Story

SKYLIGHT INNOVATIONS HOMEOWNER FEATURED

It's a question we get asked a lot: why skylights? Houses already have vertical windows, what more could a skylight do?

Well, allow us to explain...

A Brief History of VELUX

To understand the "Why Skylights" story, we have to go back to VELUX's beginning.

In 1942 Copenhagen, a young engineer came up with the idea to transform dark, empty attics into bright living spaces. World War II caused a shortage of materials but didn't hinder his vision: to make a skylight - a roof window - that is just as good as the best vertical window. And despite rations, shortages, and a world at war, that engineer ended up developing and handcrafting the first ever roof window that effectively brought more daylight and fresh air into people's homes. That engineer's name was Villum K. Rasmussen, and he's the founder of VELUX.

Today, we're still using our founder's method of making skylights. While the technology has advanced, each piece of lumber is still inspected by hand to check quality. And the glass in our windows is continuously tested to withstand powerful rain, hail, and wind.

It's all how we ensure each skylight we install delivers unmatched quality, beautiful results, and a brighter home for you.

So, Now, Why Skylights?

Daylight

At VELUX, we believe in the power that is daylight. When your home's full of light, it's full of life. Daylight can redesign the look and feel of your home every hour of the day. When you install skylights, you're opening your home to the benefits regular exposure to daylight provides, including:

Fresh Air

VELUX "Fresh Air" Skylights are designed to release stale, trapped air from your home, allowing crisper and cleaner air to flow through. When your home is regularly replenished with fresh air, it can help reduce your dependency on central air while also energizing your home. Naturally ventilating your home also helps remove dust and other air-borne impurities and can even prevent mold and mildew build-up in more humid areas, like the bathroom.

Style

When it comes down to it, skylights just look good and they help create a unique aesthetic for your home. Similar to adding mirrors on walls, skylights can make a room feel more spacious while providing gorgeous views, day or night. Additionally, cosmetic changes like skylights can add equity to your home, upping the resale value while giving certain rooms an attractive, naturally lit atmosphere.

When You're Ready to Install

So, did we convince you? Because we often ask, "Why skylights," but with all these reasons to install, the question becomes more, "Why not skylights?"

If you're ready to add more daylight and fresh air to your home, the next step is to find an installer in your area and set up a consultation. You can find a VELUX-approved skylight installer near you over on our Find an Installer page.
