Case Study: The Morris Home

The location: Ossining, New York
The problem: With a foam-core roof, this New York State home required a different approach when installing the venting skylights the homeowner wanted to create this environmentally friendly setting.
The solution: Along with the skylights installed for natural light and passive ventilation, the homeowner wanted a solar thermal collector system for domestic hot water. The VELUX solar system on the home consists of two separate pairs of venting skylights, as well as 3 collector panels (model U12) installed along a south-facing roof and connected to an insulated 120-gallon hot water storage tank.

Case Study: 200-Year Old Renovation
The location: Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
The problem: An 1800s home required creative renovations to be environmentally responsible while remaining historically appropriate.
The solution: To keep a low profile, Top Hinged Roof Windows were installed along the roof of the house. The roof windows lay flat and allow the roofline to remain uninterrupted by projections, similar to its original look. They also work to encourage significant solar heat gain during the winter and open to release heat during the summer, aiding in the overall environmental efficiency of the home.

Case Study: Home Extension
The location: Hamburg, Germany
The problem: A unique renovation challenge: the plans for this home were to turn a classic 1950s semi-detached house into a carbon-neutral home of the future.
The solution: An experiment in modernization, the LichtAktiv Haus was transformed from a box-like, closed structure to an open group of spacious rooms flooded with natural light thanks to VELUX Roof Windows and a glass facade extending over 15 feet long. The roof windows and facade were designed, positioned, and installed to ensure optimum distribution of natural light throughout the home, helping it to become self-sufficient in terms of energy.

Case Study 4: Ann Arbor Kitchen Skylights
The location: Ann Arbor, Michigan
The problem: This Colonial-style home's owner, a food columnist, needed to make some serious changes to brighten her small, dark kitchen.
The solution: Two venting skylights were added to the kitchen by architect Dawn Zuber (Studio Z Architecture) to bring in more light that would softly diffuse throughout the space below. Now, the homeowner can work and photograph her culinary creations all throughout the day without being limited to just one natural light source through vertical windows.

Case Study 5: Saddle River Sunroom
The location: Saddle River, New Jersey
The problem: A truly unique project, this entire sunroom in Saddle River, NJ needed replacing.
The solution: Once the original sunroom was dismantled and the new structural supports were engineered, skylights were mounted on, lining up exactly with the vertical windows that made up the walls. Venting skylights were mounted along the top row while fixed skylights made up the second row to fill this sunroom with daylight and fresh air.
