Explaining what is and isn’t covered by the VELUX warranty for glass skylights and flashing to homeowners can be tricky. They need to know not only what is covered, but also how they can file a claim if the need arises.
What Does the VELUX Warranty for Glass Skylights and Flashing Cover?
Glass Skylights and Flashing
20-year warranty on the seal between the panes of glass. This ensures that no visual obstructions will form between the panels of glass as a result of dust or film. This does not cover any commercial glass skylights or the large span glass skylights commonly known as SkyMax skylights.
10-year warranty on skylight and flashing for material and workmanship. This means that the skylights, flashing, and installation will be free from defects. If any issues arise, VELUX will work with the installer to remedy them. This section of the warranty covers the deck-mounted skylights FS, VS, VSE, and VSS, and the corresponding flashing. It covers curb-mounted skylights FCM, VCM, VCE, and VCS with ECL and ECW flashing. TZR, TZRL, and TZRQ Sun Tunnel skylights are also covered.
10-year hail warranty on laminated skylight glass. VELUX laminated glass skylights with double and triple panes will not crack or break because of hail. To file a claim, the homeowner must show that the glass was broken by hail, and the hailstorm must be confirmed by the National Weather Service (NWS).
5-year warranty on systems and controls. This ensures that manual operators, solar and electric-motorized parts, rain sensors, photovoltaic panels, power supplies, and electrical accessories will be free of material and workmanship defects. This includes all controls for the skylight and the skylight shade.
5-year warranty on shades ensures that all shades and blinds will be free of defects in material and workmanship.

What Does VELUX Define as a Leak?
VELUX defines a leak as the penetration of water in liquid form through the product, or between the product and the roof deck, caused by the installation of the covered product.
Condensation is not considered a leak. It is the natural result of humidity within a building or a variation between the indoor and outdoor temperatures. As a result, condensation is not covered by the warranty and is specifically excluded.
What is Not Covered by the VELUX Skylight Warranty
The VELUX warranty only covers products that are finished, installed, and operated in accordance with VELUX instructions. Claims will not be accepted if the product defect has resulted directly or indirectly from:
• Installations carried out contrary to VELUX instructions
• Installation of product outside of recommended location or conditions
• Use of skylight contrary to standard operations
• Use of incompatible replacement parts
• Inappropriate handling or storage
• Neglect, including but not limited to, failure to maintain or service the product as outlined in the manual
• Condensation and any water damage as a result of humidity
• Standing water resulting in glass corrosion
• Accidents that result in a broken skylight
• Ice damming that results in water penetration
• Re-roofing without re-wrapping using VELUX adhesive underlayment and VELUX flashing
• Extreme weather conditions
Other claims that VELUX does not warrant include:
• Minor imperfections in the glass and plastic components that do not affect the view or performance
• Minor variations in glass or plastic color
• Discoloration that is not visible to the general user
• Any change in color and fading as a result of sun, condensation, or salt spray
• Knots in the wood
• Expected reduction in product efficiency over time
• Naturally occurring variations, such as wood grain
• Color variations, shadows, or marks on the glass that do not impede view
• Corrosion due to industrial or household chemicals
• Exposure to processing after delivery, such as sanding
• Insulated glass units where any film has been applied to the glass
