The Different Parts of Your VELUX Solar Powered "Fresh Air" Skylight

SKYLIGHT INNOVATIONS HOMEOWNER FEATURED

These days, there's quite a bit more to skylights than a window on your roof that's permanently closed. With different power, venting, glass, and blind options, it's a lot to keep track of. That's why we're starting a series of posts to explain the different parts of each of our skylights. So when you look up to your skylight, you'll know exactly what you're seeing.

Today, we're kicking things off with the VELUX Solar Powered "Fresh Air" Skylight.

About the Skylight

The VELUX Solar Powered "Fresh Air" Skylight is our greenest standard flat skylight. Rather than opening manually or with the use of electricity, this skylight is powered by the sun. A small solar panel attached to the base collects all available daylight (even on cloudy days) to power the battery system that opens and closes the skylight.

The Solar Powered "Fresh Air" Skylight is compatible with VELUX ACTIVE with NETATMO, as well as a wide variety of our VELUX blinds. It also falls under our No Leak Warranty when installed with VELUX flashing. Available in deck-mount and curb-mount options, this solar-powered skylight enables you to be eligible for a federal tax credit on product and installation when installed before 2021.

The Different Parts of Your Skylight

Now, down to the nitty-gritty. This is your skylight:

And this is what all those numbers mean:

  1. Solar Panel: The remote-controlled, solar-powered skylight requires no wiring thanks to this little panel. This is where sunlight is gathered to power the skylight.
  2. Rain Sensors: With this integrated rain sensor, the skylight will close automatically at the first sign of rain. This rain sensor is known as an acoustical rain sensor. When it senses the force or vibration of a raindrop, it activates and closes the skylight.
  3. Skylight Frame: This metal frame is the backbone of your skylight. When your skylight's installed on your roof, the frame will be attached to the roof deck or a curb built by your installer. With VELUX flashing, these components work together to back up our No Leak Warranty. This warranty offers 10 years of protection on installation, plus 20 years on glass, 10 years on product, and 5 years on blinds and controls.
  4. Clean, Quiet & Safe Glass: VELUX Solar Powered "Fresh Air" Skylights come standard with our Clean, Quiet & Safe Glass. Made with Neat® glass, a silicon dioxide coating makes it exceptionally smooth so water sheets off evenly and evaporates quickly. This greatly reduces water spotting. And since it's a thicker glass, it reduces unwanted outside noise by up to 25% less than standard double pane glass and up to 50% less than a plastic skylight.
  5. Venting Capabilities: The "Fresh Air" part of the name of this skylight comes from this venting feature, which allows fresh air to flow through your home. It opens just enough to release the hot air trapped at the top of your ceiling so cooler clean air can flow.

Each Solar Powered "Fresh Air" Skylight also comes equipped with an insect screen to prevent pests from getting into your home. And, as we've mentioned before, these skylights are compatible with our blinds, which are designed to be functional and look great.
