The VELUX Sun Tunnel is a tubular skylight for spaces in a home where a traditional skylight won’t fit. Depending on the weather, a 10” VELUX Sun Tunnel can produce 1,200 to 7,200 lumens. This is equivalent to 1 to 3 100-watt incandescent lightbulbs.
The rigid Sun Tunnel is backed by a 20-year warranty that ensures that the dome, diffuser, and tube won’t splinter, crack, blister, yellow, darken, or peel off under normal home interior conditions. There is a 10-year warranty that guarantees that the Sun Tunnel and the workmanship will be free of defects. An acrylic dome Sun Tunnel has a 5-year warranty that guarantees the yellowness index will be below 4, and a 10-year warranty that guarantees the yellowness index will stay below 10.
Starting in 2022, VELUX began marking these domes on the underside of one of the vertical seams. Acrylic domes are now marked with the letter “A”, and Polycarbonate domes are marked with the letter “P”. This was done for two reasons. First, this helps us to keep our inventory more organized and accessible. But more importantly, this change helps installers and remodelers during service calls and replacements.
Some professionals can tell the difference between acrylic and polycarbonate by tapping on the dome. Acrylic makes a slightly higher-pitched tone than polycarbonate. But for professionals who don’t work with Sun Tunnel skylights every day, it can be difficult to discern between acrylic and polycarbonate domes.
Getting a job done correctly, the first time, is essential for skylight installers, roofers, and remodelers. No one likes having to return to a job once it’s completed. This is exactly the reason that the VELUX team added the markings to the domes. This ensures that professionals who replace or service a Sun Tunnel can quickly identify the necessary components. This promotes accurate ordering and installation of the correct dome while reducing callbacks.
The VELUX Sun Tunnel is a great solution for brightening just about any space in a home. The abundant daylight has been shown to help reduce energy costs while improving the overall mood of many homeowners. Not every homeowner knows exactly where they want a skylight or which one. VELUX has Design and Product Advisors who are glad to sit virtually with homeowners to discuss their skylight options.
