Touch-Up Paint Tips for VELUX Black Frame Skylights

VELUX Recommends Krylon or Rust-Oleum Matte Black to Use on Black Frame Skylights and Flashing Systems

Note: VELUX Black Frame skylights are ONLY available in the Pacific Northwest.

The easiest way to fix minor scratches on a fixed curb mount (FCM) black frame skylight or ECL black flashing kit is matte black spray paint. After we tested multiple kinds of spray paint, there were only two brands that came close to matching the finish.

Please be advised: The dried paint will NOT be an exact match. It is impossible to restore the appearance to the factory finish without replacing the flashing or the entire skylight. This paint guidance will only blend with the existing finish.    

Top Two VELUX Recommendations for Spray Paint to Touch-up Black Frame Skylights

1. Krylon Fusion All-In-One Matte Black

   Krylon Fusion Matte Black has a finish that most closely resembles the factory finish of a VELUX Black Frame Skylight. The superior spray pattern of the nozzle creates an even coat. It has a quick-dry finish that flattens as it dries. It should only be used on the metal frame or the skylight flashing.   
   
   
   

2.  Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch 2X Ultra Cover Flat/Ultra Matte Black
   When Krylon is not available, Rust-Oleum spray paint is the preferred alternative. This finish will resemble the finish of a black frame FCM, but only from a distance. The finish can be noticeably different when viewed up close. The spray paint does have a quick-dry formula for fast repairs.
   

These spray paint brands can be found at major hardware retailers, including Walmart, Lowe’s, Sherwin-Williams, and The Home Depot.

Recommended Steps for Paint Touch-up on a VELUX Black Frame FCM

1. Brush the scratch and surrounding area clean of any loose debris. If possible, clean the scratch and surrounding area with water and dry thoroughly. [je4.1]
2. Use painter’s tape to mark off a rectangle around the scratch. Make sure that there is one inch of space between the scratch and the edge of the tape.
3. Apply spray paint using the manufacturer’s recommendations.   
   1. Krylon recommends that the nozzle be held 8 to 10 inches from the surface. This helps to prevent drips, runs, or an uneven finish.
   2. Rust-Oleum recommends holding the nozzle 10 to 16 inches from the surface to be painted for the Painter’s Touch 2X series. This is to help prevent runs, drips, and irregular finishes. 
4. Allow paint to fully dry before removing tape. The paint should be dry to the touch in twenty minutes. The tape can be safely removed after 1 hour. However, for the paint to cure fully, it can take up to 24 hours.
