Songs To Install Skylights To

Written by Kat Wiseman | September 20, 2018

Whether you're on the roof, sitting at your desk, or in your truck stuck in traffic, music is going to keep your day moving. And we're not just saying that; there's been some extensive research on how listening to music affects how we perceive time, specifically in that it helps speed it along. Not only that, but it can also help improve creativity and even affect our overall mood for the day.

It's no surprise then, if you ever make your way to our Experience Center in Fort Mill, SC, you'll find most of us listening to music as we sell, design, and write about skylights.

So since we're all about skylights and music, we decided to put together a little playlist to put you in the skylight-installing mood!

Rooftop Grooves

  • "Here Comes the Sun" by The Beatles
    • We're opening it up with "Here Comes the Sun" because that's what you're doing - literally bringing the sun into people's homes! Written by George Harrison at the country house of Eric Clapton, this song celebrates not only the arrival of spring and the sun with it but also better times ahead.
  • "Sunshine of Your Love" by Cream
    • Ranked #65 on the Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and developed after the band attended a Jimi Hendrix concert, this song with its blues-based riff and harmonic motions is considered one of the most influential rock songs of all time.
  • "Walking on Sunshine" by Katrina & The Waves
    • Depending on which VELUX skylight you're installing, you may find yourself almost literally walking on sunshine during the process!
  • "The Sound of Sunshine" by Michael Franti & Spearhead
    • According to the band's frontman, Michael Franti, this upbeat, reggae fusion song is all about "the sun's ability to make any day better." As a VELUX installer, you're bringing more sunshine into your customers' lives, and this song lets you really celebrate that.
  • "No Rain" by Blind Melon
    • Going hand in hand with our next song, this is one you've probably heard before, but that doesn't make it any less fun. Plus, it's rather appropriate given your customers won't have any rain come through their skylight, guaranteed by our No Leak Promise.
  • "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" by Creedence Clearwater Revival
    • Another classic, this song - for all its symbolism - describes a particularly special weather occurrence your skylight customers will be able to experience from time to time: sunshowers!
  • "Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (a.k.a. IZ)
    • IZ, the native Hawaiian, singer-songwriter, and musician recorded this hopeful melody in a spur-of-the-moment demo session in 1988. Since then, it's been featured in several films and TV shows and is a lovely little tune to get you through the day.
  • "Over My Head (Cable Car)" by The Fray
    • We included this song for its literalness: as a skylight installer, you likely spend most of your time over the heads of others. And sometimes that can get stressful. But don't worry, The Fray's here to get you through it.
  • "Sunsets for Somebody Else" by Jack Johnson
    • One of the best things about skylights is the views they provide. Essentially, by installing skylights, you're installing for your customers the ability to see and enjoy all those amazing views, from sunrise to sunset.
  • "Steal My Sunshine" by Len
    • This 90's bop has been described as "a priceless, timeless confection that instantly calls up sweltering, shimmering beaches" thanks to its "sun-kissed, sun-bleached blend of hip-hop, pop, disco, post-Beastie Boys cleverness, and California culture." In other words, you're sure to have fun listening to this song on the job.
  • "Rain is a Good Thing" by Luke Bryan
    • Although VELUX skylights are built to keep the rain out, there's no denying that it can be a very, very good thing. This fun country hit celebrates all the benefits rain has, like making corn to turn into whiskey!
  • "Gold on the Ceiling" by The Black Keys
    • Figuratively, you're installing a little gold on someone's ceiling every time you install a skylight, which is a fun thing to think about while you're out on the job.
  • "Dancing on the Ceiling" by Lionel Richie
    • Who else to end on but the King of Soft Soul? Although not one of his most critically acclaimed songs, "Dancing on the Ceiling" is a fun tune that remains quintessential 80s. And, really, what's more fun than boogying while you work?

Are there any songs you've found that enhance your skylight installing experience? Tell us about it - we'd love to hear em!
